Ovar and Santa Maria da Feira

The "Land of Santa Maria" was a medieval administrative organization in the IX century by Alfonso III of Leon, during the Christian reconquest of the peninsula.

The head of the region was given to the Castle of Santa Maria.

There are a lot of cultural expressions that mark the socio-cultural activity of Ovar: the famous and fun Carnival, Processions, the Sea Feastivity in Furadouro, the feast in honor of St. Christopher, the feast in honor of Boa Viagem Lady, the festival in honor of Labor Lady and the Feast in honor of Santa Catarina in Ribeira. Another important element in the cultural heritage of Ovar is the use of tile as a decorative component in the local architecture. As natural elements of high ecological value stand out from the sea, the forest and the lagoon, with particular suitability for the development of activities related with tourism and leisure.
